Shadow RIP

April 2002 - 28 February 2013

Shadow was my very special boy. He was given to me as a puppy but the only information I was given on his background was that both his parents worked sheep. My best guess is he was a Working Sheep Dog of some sort and possibly crossed with something else such as German Shepherd! He travelled round parts of the country with me as I moved jobs while working in the horse racing industry. He grew up as a yard dog on racing yards and had a great time. He used to love jumping the hurdles etc.

We discovered he had PRA when he was 7 and he became almost completely blind over the last years of his life. He adapted really well as it was such a gradual process. He was still really happy and continued to enjoy running around off the lead on his walks. He has also developed spondylosis (fusing vertebra). We kept him warm and rugged up in the winter to stop him getting stiff and he was still happy and moving well enough that in 2011 and 2012 he was placed every time he was shown in Veteran and Crossbreed classes, even winning best Crossbreed at a show in summer 2012 against much younger dogs!! My many thanks go to Chris Sargeant of Total Pet Care, Haslemere for finding a way to keep him happy and comfortable until 2012. My thanks also go to Mark Elliot of Mark Elliott and Associates, Oving near Chichester, (a fantastic vet that also has Homeopathy and Acupuncture skills) whose accupuncture and homeopathic remedies gave Shadow a new lease of life over the summer of 2012 and into 2013! I am sure that without the help of these 2 vets he would have been put down may years early.

Sadly on 25th February 2013 Shadow was diagnosed with a very aggressive tumour on his hip and was given 6-8 weeks to live. We had no intention of letting him suffer due to the rapid deterioration he would go through so on 28th February 2013 he was given sleep at home by our vet Chris who he knew well, surrounded by Derek, myself, Poppy and the cats. Shadow was a much loved special, faithful, loyal and totally devoted companion. He touched the hearts of many people he met having fan clubs at various pubs and restaurants he frequented. He was a very happy tough independent little man who took the jobs he took on very seriously and was still very active and keen to be out and about despite the fact that he was almost totally blind (PRA) and had spondylosis. He will be very much missed and leaves a big hole in our hearts and lives.

Shadow's problems were what made me so keen on health testing and looking at the pedigree lines for all the future dogs here at Kirkbridgend, bought or bred. Shadow himself was neutered and was never bred from.

Shadow was a registered member of the KC Companion Dog Club and was shown at Companion and Fun Dog Shows.
